"Is a Cardigan for You?"

Cardigan Welsh Corgis are intelligent and also full of fun. They like to see if they can win you over to their way of thinking. If you are looking for a couch potato, Cardis are not for you.

They have an affinity for children and will side with them when corrected by parents -- so be careful! They are gentle enough with children to accept any and all antics. They seem to know if someone is handicapped and they adapt their play. However, they will play "fetch the ball" for hours, take a short nap, and go again.

Cardigans are more laid back than the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, yet bold enough to make excellent guard dogs. They also can hear a butterfly over the neighbor's house, so they do bark. Barking is controlled and can be a blessing in case of protection or danger. We have had cases of young children going into the street and being pulled back by their Cardi. A nine-month-old puppy saved his human family from a house fire by barking. Cardigans are not barkless.

Cardigans believe that they are big dogs, so we call them "a big dog in a little package." They are also like potato chips: one is never enough. They housebreak easily and like to be clean -- but mind you, they can and will do extensive excavations in a yard. Again, this can be controlled.

Cardigans do not need or like extensive grooming. They are "wash and wear" dogs. A bath when dirty and a weekly brushing will do. Since they are a herding breed, they do not like to have their feet fiddled with. Nails can be a problem; we con them into the nail-cutting ritual, and it works.

Cardigans are great companions and love to be where their families are. They do not object to being alone for periods of time. We recommend crate training. This helps to contain their creativity when you are not home. As they grow older they are great housesitters without the crate.

Our enjoyment of the breed is that they entertain you and love doing it. They are also great con artists -- beware!

In our minds, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi truly is the dog "for all seasons and every reason."
